Configure the Firestorm viewer for Caprica Virtual Worlds.

Firestorm is the most popular viewer for OpenSimulator-based grids like Caprica. It offers comprehensive features, a familiar interface, and excellent compatibility.

This guide will help you: * Download and install Firestorm * Configure Firestorm for Caprica * Optimize performance * Set up essential preferences

Supported Versions: * Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) * macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon) * Linux (64-bit)

Windows: * 64-bit version for most modern computers * 32-bit only if you have an older system

macOS: * Intel version for Intel Macs * Apple Silicon version for M1/M2 Macs * Check your Mac's processor in “About This Mac”

Linux: * 64-bit version required - Choose appropriate package (DEB, RPM, or AppImage)

1. Download the Windows installer 2. Run the installer (.exe) 3. Follow the on-screen prompts 4. Choose installation location (default is fine) 5. Wait for installation to complete 6. Launch Firestorm from desktop or Start menu

1. Download the macOS version 2. Open the .dmg file 3. Drag Firestorm to Applications folder 4. Open Applications and launch Firestorm 5. If prompted, confirm you want to open it

Note: On first launch, macOS may warn about the app. This is normal for unsigned apps. Right-click and choose “Open” to bypass.

1. Launch Firestorm 2. The Firestorm Startup screen appears 3. Choose “Next” or “Get Started” 4. Review the preferences (we'll configure these for Caprica)

* Choose your preferred language * This affects the viewer interface only * Can be changed later in Preferences

1. Click the Grid Manager button (top-left) 2. Or go to Me → Preferences → Grids 3. Click Add New Grid

1. Click Save 2. Select “Caprica” from the grid dropdown 3. Enter your Caprica username and password 4. Click Log In

Access Preferences: * Me → Preferences → Graphics

Recommended Settings:

For Low-End Systems: * Set Quality to Low * Reduce Draw Distance to 64m - Disable advanced features - Reduce texture memory

Access Preferences: * Me → Preferences → Network

Recommended Settings: * Maximum Bandwidth: 500-1500 kbps * Disk Cache Size: 512-1024 MB * Cache Location: Default is fine

Troubleshooting: * Reduce bandwidth if connection is slow - Increase cache if you have disk space - Clear cache if experiencing texture issues

Access Preferences: * Me → Preferences → Sound & Media

Recommended Settings: * Enable Streaming Music: Check * Enable Streaming Media: Check * Volume: Adjust to preference * Mute When Minimized: Optional

Access Preferences: * Me → Preferences → Chat

Recommended Settings: * Chat Font Size: 12-14 (adjust for readability) * Show Timestamps: Enable * Bubble Chat: Enable for better visibility - IM Log: Enable for saving conversations

1. Ensure “Caprica” is selected as grid 2. Enter your username 3. Enter your password 4. Click Log In

* First login may take longer (loading textures) - You'll appear at a welcome area - Use chat to say hello - Explore the area

If stuck: * Wait for region to load completely - Use Ctrl+R to reload scenery - Try relogging if necessary

General: * Close other applications - Reduce draw distance - Lower graphics quality - Clear cache periodically

Specific: * Disable advanced lighting if laggy - Reduce texture memory if low RAM - Use “Low” graphics for old computers - Disable shadows if needed

View Stats: * Ctrl+Shift+1 — Open statistics bar - Monitor FPS (frames per second) - Check Sim FPS (region performance) - Monitor packet loss

Good Performance: * Viewer FPS: 30+ (smooth) - Sim FPS: 45 (region is running well) - Packet Loss: < 1%

Performance Issues: * Low viewer FPS → Reduce graphics settings - Low Sim FPS → Region is busy, not your fault - High packet loss → Network issues

Firestorm supports multiple grids: * Add other OpenSimulator grids - Switch between grids easily - Each grid has separate settings

To Add Another Grid: 1. Grid Manager → Add New Grid 2. Enter grid information 3. Switch between grids via dropdown

When to Clear: * Textures won't load - Display is corrupted - Performance degraded - After viewer updates

While Firestorm is recommended, other viewers work with Caprica:
